A little water between
Have you seen my posts about the places I went to in the Philippines? Be sure to check them out for my 5 star review of this amazing place. This network of islands is a unique location offering so much to travelers.
In some ways, traveling to a place that is made up of islands can be daunting. A body of water makes it harder to get from place to place, meaning you rely on air transportation to travel around. On the other hand, there's something about the isolation that allows you to accept where you are and exist more in that space and time.
I'm a smart person who does stupid things...often. Need some examples? I've parked my car in the city and left it running for hours, I've gone to the airport to travel internationally only to realize my passport was expired. (oops!) Hey- It makes life more exciting.
Another example was when I left my phone at a restaurant on an island in the Philippines just before getting on an airplane to fly to another island. At first, I was stressed to think of my phone being on an entirely different island from me. But then I let it go. It wasn't something I could get to easily and I'd have to be patient and wait for my chance to return to retrieve it, which was only going to be in about 10 days.
During those 10 phone-less days, I was able to enjoy my time exploring where I was, meeting new people and trying new food. I didn't think about my little phone, waiting for me across the sea. I knew the phone would be there when I got to it. I didn't give any brain real estate to my phone because it wasn't productive and it wouldn't change the circumstances.
I wish I could do that a little more with the things that are on my mind today. We constantly have things we are thinking about, planning or fearing. There will always be something that will be weighing on us, but should we let them be there? Wouldn't it be nice to put a little water between you and that thing and come back to it when you can? And in the meantime, enjoy what's infront of you.
