El Nido
El Nido is the most well known part of Palawan Island. It's the gateway to the Bacuit Archipelago and landforms you couldn't even imagine. Some people choose to stay on the mainland and take day trips out to the islands. It is easy to find tours to purchase. We opted for a night on the main land and then two nights at an island resort. I highly recommend this approach.
El Nido mainland
You'll pass a shack about to fall down and then directly next to it a western style bar with swanky lights and beachfront seating. The beachfront is not that beautiful and the majority of the buildings are more like shanties than anything else. And yet, it has a certain charm that invites you in and makes you enjoy it. While in El Nido be sure to check out:
Nacpan Beach- It's a bit of a ride to get here, but the beach is more pleasant than what you'll see in El Nido.
Rent a motorycle- Escape the crowds and hop on a bike. You'll be able to get to the nearby beaches, see some of the smaller towns and take in beautiful views like the one in the picture below.
The gas stations were cool to see. Typically found infront of someone house. And yes, it's held in old liquor bottles.
Stroll the streets- Everyone is walking the streets in the evening. Buy things from the local vendors, meet the locals and try the many different bars and restaurants. My favorite was Trattoria Altrove. I was ready for some Italian food and they delivered. Pizza and pasta was delicious. I'm all about eating local cuisine, but sometimes a gal just needs her pizza.
El Nido Islands
Escape the chaos of the mainland and book a few nights on an island. We stayed at Miniloc Island, but there are a bunch to choose from depending on your budget. Miniloc Island is home of a single hotel, built into the side of the hill. The resort staff will fill your day with island tours and snorkeling. Take advantage of the morning and afternoon tours, don't stick on just the one island! The locals have great stories about the history of the natural beauty surrounding you. Take it all in!
While among the islands, here are some of my favorite things:
Snake Island- An easy hike to some amazing views. And by "easy hike" I mean, I did it in a bikini in about 10 minutes.
Large and Small Lagoon- The large lagoon can be accessed by boat during certain tides. The small lagoon can only be accessed by kayaking or swimming. The lagoons are made by a cave having its roof cave in. Pictures don't do it justice, it's a must see.
Entalula Island-This private island is used to host guests for lunch and drinks. Check out that water!
A few more pictures because I just loved it so much!
