Hi.

Welcome to The Mark of Joy. I document my adventures in travel, and capture the joy I find.

The joy is in the vibrancy

The joy is in the vibrancy

A striking brightness of color. That's the definition of the word vibrancy and also the perfect description of Colombia. Whether you are in the old city of Cartagena or the paths of Tayrona Park, the colors are striking.

The old city wall

City buildings are splashed in orange, yellow, and red. The flag hangs loud and proud off buildings and rooftops, and colorful art for sale leans up against the buildings. It seems no one is afraid to use color.

And the people are just as vibrant as the color that surrounds them. The other definition of vibrancy is the state of being full of energy and life. First, can we just pause at what a wonderful definition that is? So how is Colombia vibrant? The man singing you songs in the plazas wants you to laugh and sing along with him. The woman at the cafe wants to tell you a story. The couple in the salsa club wants to teach you how to dance. At one point I was in a car with two strangers and we were all laughing and joking together almost right away. The personalities are big, the dancing is big, and the music is big!

Go to Colombia if you need some lightness to your life, if you are ready to swing those hips despite not knowing what you're doing, and if you want to listen to music in the plaza among bright red table cloths.
