Hi.

Welcome to The Mark of Joy. I document my adventures in travel, and capture the joy I find.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker

If you are researching Belize, then you’ve read the great debate about whether or not to go to Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. I’m here to give you the final answer. BOTH. The islands are so close together (20 minutes by boat) that there is no excuse for staying in one spot the whole time. If you aren’t sure how to split up your time I’d say 30% Caye Caulker and 70% Ambergris Caye.

Unfortunately, I didn't know that before going, so I chose to stick to Ambergris Caye the entire time. I managed to sneak in a day trip to Caye Caulker and I am so glad I did. Caye Caulker is out of a story book. The main street is covered in white dirt, the houses are all painted beautiful bold colors, the outdoor market is full of friendly people saying hello and dancing, and the split is the perfect spot for swimming.

The vibe on Caye Caulker is even slower than Ambergris Caye. No joke, I was walking down the street and a local said “How you doing?”

I responded “Good, how are you?”

And he says back to me “I’m going slower than you...”

The exchange didn’t even make sense, but I suppose to him going slow meant he was doing better than good! The island is quiet and small. This is a good spot to relax, have slow meals, and catch up on your reading list. A few things you can’t miss while you’re here-

The Split-The split is the place where Caye Caulker is literally split into its two parts- north and south. The town turned this into a swimming hole with a bar, diving platform, and lounge chairs. There was something so unique about this location that made it so fun to visit. Just watch out for boats, they do pass through the split!

Yes, you are seeing inner tubes, bar top tables, and swings, all in the water at this bar. The novelty never wore off for me. I sat on the swing the entire time talking to people hanging out or just swinging on my own! This is the kind of spot you dream about running to when you are stuck in the most boring conference meeting- so don’t miss your chance to experience it in real life!
