Hi.

Welcome to The Mark of Joy. I document my adventures in travel, and capture the joy I find.

3 things that surprised me about Ambergris Caye, Belize

1. Everyone speaks English- well almost everyone. Belize was owned by England for a long time so the majority of folks speak English. I didn’t get to practice my Spanish at all!

2. It’s expensive. I was mentally prepared for Nicaragua prices- and I was met with Boston prices. A smoothie was $7! And it’s not like you are walking into a Jamba Juice, you are going up to the corner shanty! Here’s proof!

3. Sea grass is everywhere and stinky. According to the locals, every 4 years the island is bombarded with sea grass. It lingers along the shoreline and makes for an unpleasant visual and stench. I felt bad for everyone who came to sit outside at their hotel beach, because you really couldn’t enjoy it. If this happens to you when you go to Belize, go to Secret Beach. It’s never on that side of the island.
